Comfort on a grand scale: Controlmini delivering central control at the Hanau sports campus

A large complex with a triple sports hall and extensive outdoor facilities – with its new sports campus, the Turngemeinde 1837 Hanau e. V., Germany, has created one of the most ambitious projects for recreational and club sports in the city’s history. At the heart of the site is our smart Controlmini touch panel (now known as the Control 12), which, together with our YOUVI visualisation software, provides central control of the entire building installation.

Bringing intelligence to a large-scale sports campus with 30 kilometres of KNX cabling

The newly built sports campus comprises a main building and spacious outdoor areas. Its centrepiece is a 45 x 55 metre triple sports hall with a double-sprung floor and retractable partition walls. In addition, there are several modern studios and a bright, welcoming cafeteria.

The outdoor facilities are equally impressive: a 600-metre forest-floor running track with gentle hills invites joggers to train in natural surroundings. There is also a 200-metre training track and a 110-metre sprint lane. Athletics enthusiasts benefit from facilities for discus and hammer throw, shot put, long jump and high jump. Further opportunities for sport include archery, beach volleyball and tennis.

One of the requirements of the tender issued by Will GmbH (electrical planning) was the use of KNX technology for building automation.

The project brief required the use of KNX technology for building automation. The contract was awarded to Elektro Essel GmbH & Co. KG from Bad Soden-Salmünster – a company that has already realised several KNX projects with our touch panels, including one at the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt.

To enable the extensive control of the campus, an impressive total of 30,000 metres of KNX cabling was installed – around five kilometres outdoors and approximately twenty-five kilometres inside the building.

Ready for every sporting occasion

The Controlmini has been permanently installed at the main building’s reception area, where it is accessible to authorised staff and serves as the central control unit for the entire complex.

Whether it’s lighting inside the building or across the outdoor facilities – including the running tracks – shading control in the rooms, or parking management with gate and barrier systems, all key functions of the sports campus can be conveniently managed through YOUVI at the touch of a finger.

  • Scheduled central commands:
The outdoor lighting is controlled via time switches that adjust automatically according to the time of day and level of daylight. Central lighting commands are also managed by timers, ensuring that lights switch off automatically in the evening when the building is no longer in use.
  • Convenient shading:
The shading of training rooms and individual façade sections helps to prevent overheating during the summer months. Settings can be adjusted individually using KNX push buttons.
  • Door locking and parking management:
The main entrance doors are operated automatically, with opening hours stored in YOUVI and easily adjustable at any time. The parking facilities – including the roller gate and barrier system – are also fully integrated into YOUVI..
  • Room temperature control
The underfloor heating system across all areas can be conveniently monitored and adjusted from a central location.
  • Future control via the YOUVI app:
Work is already underway to integrate the Connect module, which will enable users to manage and adjust building functions remotely using the YOUVI app.

The system integrators at Elektro Essel particularly appreciate the performance, value for money and modern design of our touch panels, as well as the intuitive operation of YOUVI and its flexibility to adapt to users’ needs.

“Especially with such a wide range of users – from school classes and club members to the TG Hanau team – simple operation is absolutely essential,” explains the Elektro Essel team. “With YOUVI, we can present all the key functions clearly and tailor them precisely to TG Hanau’s requirements.”

The system setup went smoothly, thanks in part to the team’s previous experience with our products and the convenient ETS import process. Buttons, rooms and switching functions were created automatically, and logic functions were easy to configure. Minor initial issues were quickly resolved with the support of our PEAKnx team – a level of fast and reliable service the system integrators were keen to highlight.

Long-term support by the system integrator

Ongoing support for the project is provided by Elektro Essel. In accordance with the City of Hanau’s requirements, remote access has been deliberately avoided – meaning the system integrator remains on hand to provide on-site assistance whenever technical questions arise.

A flagship project – for Hanau and beyond

With a total investment of around 16 million euros, the new sports campus is one of the largest sports projects in Hanau’s history. Funded by the city, district, state and federal government, it has created a space that benefits not only the TG Hanau club and its 4,000 members, but the entire region. The campus is widely regarded as a flagship project – praised for its open concept, sustainability and social relevance.

Whether for school sports, club activities or public events, the campus is designed for maximum versatility – and its building control system effortlessly adapts to these different scenarios thanks to KNX technology and our Controlmini with YOUVI. We are proud to be part of such an outstanding large-scale project.
